【OUTLINE】

The Jomon culture, which has matured and flourished while adapting to the severe changes in the natural environment, is a unique Japanese culture that has lasted for more than 10,000 years and is unlike any other in the world. We will be visiting the Jomon Culture Center where you can learn about the lives of people living within the Jomon culture through comprehensive exhibits. This museum permanently displays the only national treasure in Hokkaido, the "Hollow Clay Figure," known by the nickname of "Kakku."

The center also functions as a Roadside Station (rest area with shops selling local produce, snacks, souvenirs, etc.). The museum displays a variety of unearthed relics such as stoneware and earthenware excavated from the remains of the Jomon period, focusing specifically on the Minami Kayabe Jomon Archaeological Site. This plan includes a visit to the Jomon Culture Center and a hands-on experience of the Jomon culture.

You can choose and try one activity from the following: making earthenware and clay objects with soap clay, making Jomon origami, making Jomon straps and accessory, a fire starting experience, or making a Kakku mask.

Please choose one from the following five cultural experiences.

1. Making earthenware and clay objects with soap clay

By kneading the soap clay, you can mold an earthenware or a Magatama, an ancient Japanese ornament made of comma-shaped beads to your liking.

It can also be used as soap.

   The time required: 60 minutes

2. Jomon origami

Origami is a traditional Japanese cultural activity of folding paper. You can make a container (cup type) with origami on which mesh pattern (Jomon) is printed.

There are extras available for souvenirs.

    The time required: 20 minutes

3. Making a Jomon strap and accessory

Select five of your favorite beads from several types, such as wood beads, shellfish, and walnuts. Tie them through a string and attach the metal fittings on the strap to complete it.

    The time required: 20 minutes

4. Fire starting experience

This activity entails learning how to start a fire primitively. Once your fire is made, you will receive a “fire starter certificate.”

    The time required: 30 minutes

5. Making a Kakku mask

Paint your favorite color on paper where the face of Kakku is printed. Kakku is the nickname of the only national treasure in Hokkaido and is displayed in the museum. After laminating the paper, make holes near the ears and pass rubber bands through the holes. Now your Kakku mask is completed!

    The time required: 30 minutes
