Enjoy this special experience including an overnight stay in a monk's quarters. Observe the monks who have taken care of the 'unquenchable flame' for 1,200 years. It is said this flame was lit by Kobo-Daishi Kukai, the foundeder the Shingon (True Word) sect of Japanese Buddhism in the 8th century, during his ascetic practices.


  • Join the work of ascetic monks who have been keeping the unquenchable flame of Reikado alive for 1,200 years. This flame is the source of the Peace Light in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
  • Stay overnight in a monk's quarters near the top of Miyajima's Mt. Misen.
  • Learn about the faith of the ascetic monks through sutra writing meditation, Zen meditation, and the practice of eating rice porridge in the morning.

Learn about the work of ascetic monks who have watched over the unquenchable flame of Reikado for the last 1,200 years. This flame is also the source of the Peace Light in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. This tour includes sutra copying inside a monk's quarter's near the summit of the mountain, star-gazing with the monks, and a chance to see the sunrise over the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea, from which you feel the freshness of a new beginning.
