【STORY】

The Noto Peninsula has long prospered as a transportation hub due to its geographical conditions. During the Edo period, merchant ships that used the western route connecting Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, and western Japan were called Kitamae-bune. They made a profit by buying and selling at ports of call. Fukuura Port in Shika Town was famous as a place of exchange with Bohai Province in ancient times and as a refuge port for Kitamae-bune ships.

【HIGHLIGHTS】

  • Visit and learn about the oldest wooden lighthouse in Japan and an important lighthouse in the Kitamae-bune trade.
  • Among the ports of call for Kitamae-bune ships, it is one of the few symbols that speak of the prosperity of the Noto Peninsula.
  • It was also an important base for trade with Balhae (today known as Northern China).
