【STORY】

Did you know there is a long-established kiri (paulownia) craft store in Asakusa, known as the "town of craftsmanship," with a history of over 100 years?

Kiri craftsmanship produces a variety of items, including kiri boxes for storing art pieces, kiri chests of drawers for clothing, as well as geta (wooden sandals) and cutting boards.

The material, kiri, is light, fire-resistant, and has moisture control and insect repellent effects. Because of these properties, it has been highly valued in Japan, where there were frequent fires in the past due to drastic seasonal changes.

In Japanese culture, kimonos are stored in kiri chests, while antiques and valuables are kept in kiri boxes. This tradition of carefully storing precious items in kiri boxes is still ingrained in Japanese culture today. Even now, gifts to loved ones are often presented in kiri boxes.

The longstanding kiri craft store, Hakocho, utilizes a unique technique called kiri wood inlay craftsmanship in which scraps of kimono fabric are incorporated into the box or chest. By applying silk kimono fabric backed with Japanese paper, the result is an even more beautiful and elegant kiri box.

And in this experience, you'll have the special opportunity to tour the craftsman's workshop, which is not typically open to the public. Many may be curious about the environment and the individuals crafting these beautiful kiri boxes.

Personally experience the traditional and delicate techniques unique to the Japanese, as well as the dedication of craftsmen who continue to preserve and pass on these skills. If you've ever wondered about the artistry behind creating these exquisite kiri boxes, this is your chance to delve into the world where they come to life.
