Miyajima, known as the "Island of the Gods," is itself a sacred site. Itsukushima-jinja Shrine was built over the sea to preserve the sanctity of the island. In ancient times, worshippers, including fishermen and merchants, would pass through the giant shrine gate by sea. This tour allows you to experience this unique maritime pilgrimage, offering a close-up view of the impressive 16-meter-high shrine gate. Don’t miss the opportunity to perform the Japanese traditional prayer of two bows, two claps, and one bow from the water.

*Depending on the tide, it may not be possible to approach the shrine gate. Please check the tide schedule or inquire with us for the best times.

Explore the nature-rich western coast of Miyajima, where remnants of ancient dwellings from the Yayoi period(300 BC – 250 AD) are believed to exist.

■Visit the Mystical Seven Seashore Shrines Along Miyajima's Coast

The deity of Itsukushima-jinja Shrine is said to have circled the island to find a suitable place to reside. Following this tradition, pilgrims visiting Itsukushima-jinja Shrine would perform a purification ritual known as "Oshima merugi (Nanaura meguri)" visiting several shrines along the coast to cleanse their minds and body. One of these shrines is Mitoko-jinja Shrine, believed to be where the deity was temporarily enshrined during the construction of Itsukushima-jinja Shrine. It is the seventh and final shrine in the formal pilgrimage. The rock platform where Mitoko-jinja Shrine stands features a unique pattern of cracks, said to be the origin of the shrine’s crest. Be sure to take a closer look!

The tour concludes at Pier 3 on Miyajima, right next to the ferry terminal. Enjoy the rest of your visit to Miyajima with land-based sightseeing, including a visit to Itsukushima-jinja Shrine, strolling in the shopping district, and meeting the friendly deer that roam the island.
