The spirit of art and Musashi, passed down in the Hosokawa family for more than 700 years, and the experience Hosokawa-ryu BONSEKI (The Book of Five Rings, The Book of Emptiness)

【OUTLINE】

Hosokawa-ryu BONSEKI was founded by Hosokawa Yusakai, the first generation of the Hosokawa family, and Hosokawa Tadaoki, the second generation of the Hosokawa family. BONSEKI is an art form that depicts nature with natural stones and white sand on a black lacquer tray, and has a history of about 1,000 years. In Hosokawa-ryu BONSEKI, waka poems are added to this art form to further enhance the elegance and wabi and sabi of Japanese culture, which is one of Kumamoto's proudest arts. 

In this plan,you will enjoy the arragement of Suizenji Jojuen Garden  in Hosokawa-ryu BONSEKI with  the BONSEKI instructor under the theme of “The Book of Five Rings” written by Miyamoto Musashi, the greatest swordsman in Japan.

Invited by the Hosokawa family, the feudal lord of the Kumamoto domain, Miyamoto Musashi spent his later years in Kumamoto, where he founded the Niten Ichiryu style, wrote the Book of Five Rings, and greatly influenced the spirit of Bushido.

You will enjoy the aesthetics of the “Kumamoto Samurai” of “Wabi & Sabi” and learn the essence of the spirit of the “Book of Five Rings” through a time of self-reflection.

• This plan will be held at the “Suizenji Hosokawa Culture Creation Center, Yusui-tei” located near Suizenji Jojuen Garden, a garden that has been attracting visitors with its seasonal beauty for over 350 years.
• Through the Hosokawa-ryu BONSEKI, you can experience the charm of the Apology culture and the spirituality of the Book of Five Rings (The Book of Emptiness ).
• You can learn traditional techniques directly from the Bonseki instructor and experience them firsthand.

Upon arrival, we will give you a detailed explanation of the plan theme, “Musashi Miyamoto” and “The Book of Five Rings”. After that, you will experience Hosokawa-style Bonseki under the guidance of a Bonseki instructor.
