【STORY】
Discover a special program that brings you closer to the roots of Tokyo, set against the backdrop of Meisatsu Zojoji Temple, a revered site where the guardian deities of the Edo period are enshrined.
Meisatsu Zojoji Temple is one of Japan's most significant temples, with deep ties to the Tokugawa Shogunate, who laid the foundations for modern peace. When Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun, entered Edo (now Tokyo), he became a patron of Meisatsu Zojoji Temple, which later became the family temple (Bodai-ji) of the Tokugawa clan, housing the ancestral graves and conducting funeral services. Six of the fifteen Tokugawa shoguns are buried at Meisatsu Zojoji Temple.
Despite the challenges of fires and air raids in recent history, Meisatsu Zojoji Temple has been rebuilt and restored multiple times. Today, its San'en-zan Meisatsu Zojoji Temple's Sangedatsumon Gate is designated as a National Treasure and Important Cultural Property.
In this program, you will be guided by a local coordinator well-versed in the cultural heritage of the Tokugawa family and Meisatsu Zojoji Temple. You’ll delve into the heart of Edo, the origin of Tokyo, and learn about the Tokugawa family's legacy, which brought about one of the longest periods of peace in the world, lasting over 260 years.
